Publication of Joint Statement - B'Nai Brith Canada Time Line

Election 2008, Winnipeg Free Press[/caption]Following is a time line of my actions to regain my credibility and protect other journalists, so that they may write without fear:

  • September 24, 2008 - Hughes is nominated as the Liberal candidate in the riding of Kildonan/St.Paul

  • September 25, 2008 - an anonymous blogger alleges anti-Semitism in a 2002 Hughes column entitled “Get the Truth”
    • national media and internet pursue blogger’s story
    • B’nai Brith, Canadian Jewish Congress, Minister of the Environment Peter Kent (Conservative/ Thornhill) allege Hughes to be unfit for office

  • September 26, 2008 - Liberal Leader Stephane Dion drops Hughes as a candidate

  • September 26 to October 14, 2008 - international and national media coverage of the allegation continues to federal election day

  • October 14, 2008 - Hughes runs as an independent, placing third out of five candidates

  • June 16, 2009 - on behalf of Hughes, the Winnipeg law firm Tapper, Cuddy sues three defendants – B’nai Brith, Canadian Jewish Congress and, Minister of the Environment Peter Kent (Conservative Thornhill) for defamation

  • December, 2012 - the case is settled out of court. The settlement is accompanied by a public statement from the defendants affirming Hughes is not an anti-Semite.
